Sure it may not rank on many peoples all-time favorite lists, but it still gives a ridiculously fun plot, with classic Hanks comedy from the 80’s.
Synopsis
A stressed out suburbanite takes a week long stay-cation and begins to think there may be something sinister about his odd neighbors.
My Thoughts
You cannot go wrong with any Tom Hanks comedies from the 80’s and to me, this film is his most underrated performances, and is one of my all-time favorite films. When I am in a bad mood or having a bad day, this crazy movie is the perfect remedy.
Tom Hanks is outright hilarious as the stressed out suburban dad and his physical comedy in this film provides more than enough laughs. The writing is clever and other than the forced ridiculous premise, the comedy never tries too hard and there are tons of subtle laughs, like much of his comedic efforts in the decade before he become more known and praised for his dramatic work.
The rest of the cast is excellent and all are perfect matches for their odd and quirky characters. Ducommun was as laughable as intended as the slob next door, and I can think of no one better to play the crazy military veteran than Bruce Dern. Both of these guys delivered some great lines that still rouse a chuckle today.
Add Carrie Fischer, Corey Feldman and Henry Gibson to the story and you have more than enough comedic excellence to fill any film. Feldman was hot at the time, albeit on the start of his drop in the run of 80’s hits, but I think he was just as comical as the lead characters. He was great as the kid next door and his personality and appearance fit the era well. With the script giving him some chances he was able to deliver some great laughs as well.
The whole concept of the stories premise is ridiculous but that is what makes it so appealing. The scenario of a normal suburban neighborhood with a single house filled with an eerie family and the urban legends that go through neighborhoods across america can all be related to which pulls in your interest, despite the ‘outrageous-factor’ being ratcheted immensely of course.
There are many hilarious scenes in this movie and the group of guys work great with each other. You can actually feel these guys are really neighbors. While many people think films like these are dumb and not worth the time I enjoy the creativity of these past works from the era. The unique creation of the odd family was highly enjoyable and provided many dark comedic scenarios and added a unique twist tot he feel of this film.
While many comedies today recycle the same old plot-premise, movie like these despite their age are still fun to sit back and watch. Anyone who is a fan of Tom Hanks should check this one out and it you want a feel-good comedy that gives you a little bit of everything then do yourself a favor and check out “The ‘Burbs”.
